Sample Lesson Plan

Anticipatory Set: Teacher will crack the ice from an ice tray onto a plate. Teacher will ask the class to tell what is on the plate. What words describe it, where have they seen it before, where does it come from and how does it change shape?

Behavioral Objective: Students will observe ice cubes in a glass of water making a prediction as to whether the ice will float and if the water will get higher in the glass as the ice melts.

Set: Clear party glasses filled half way with water, two ice cubes per student, magic marker, unlined paper, pencil, pitcher and paper towels.

Directions: Hand out cups, tell students to place them on their desks, but not to touch them. Teacher will go around filling cups half way with water. Next hand out Magic Markers and tell students to draw a line on the outside of cups at the water line. Next, place a napkin on each desk with two ice cubes on the napkin. Tell students to carefully place ice cubs in their cups. Ask students to draw another line around the cup if they think the water will get higher or do not draw another line if they expect no change. Hand out unlined paper, ask students to draw what the cup looks like now and what it will look like by the time they leave.

Guided Practice: Teacher will model her directions to the class.

Closure: Ask students to show and explain to you what happened to the cup of water and ice. Independent

Practice: Homework. Ask students to repeat the experiment at home with more ice and bring back their two pictures tomorrow.
