#101
>>Candidate: Sheena Martin Jones
>>Job Target: Corporate Controller
Sheena After | Sheena Before

Sheena's resume needed a complete overhaul and design makeover. Her new Web resume has a great new look and a host of improvements:

  • Strategic Presentation: Sheena's Qualifications Summary actively presents the required skill set. Note how the summary statement is keyword-heavy and incorporates critical bottom-line skills: the ability to optimize efficiency, reduce costs, protect assets, and maximize profitability.

  • Style Makeover: Sheena's new style projects a more professional and polished image.

  • Improved Readability: Eliminating the background image (behind the text) makes the resume much easier to read.

  • Appropriate Graphics: Sheena's "before" graphics did little to improve her resume's appearance, but her revamped resume projects a much better image. It sports an attractive muted sidebar with just a touch of color. Sheena's new name and category headings were created in Photoshop.

  • Complete Job Descriptions: Sheena's new resume includes "fleshed out" job descriptions and achievements. Note how bullet points are used to set off special projects and accomplishments.

  • Strategic Editing: In some cases, what you remove from a resume can be just as important as what you add. In this case, we removed the education "date span" and replaced it with the graduation year. We also removed Sheena's reference list, the links to job descriptions, and the URL at the bottom of the page.

  • Additional Functionality: To improve functionality, we added a "Download" section that allows recruiters and employers to retrieve the format they want. We also set up a hyperlink to the Computer Skills section and added a descriptive title to the HTML page – which will make it easier for employers and recruiters to find Sheena's resume on the Net.

E-Mail Savvy

In addition to redesigning and rewriting Sheena's resume, we gave her a new e-mail address. E-mail addresses like this reinforce the job target and add a professional touch.

Avoid e-mail addresses that are not intuitive. For example, plemnmnell778@abc.com is not easy to remember (or spell) and puts an extra burden on you AND your audience.

If you want employers to visit your Web resume, you should use a simple and intuitive URL. Make it easy for prospective employers to find you! Try using your job target (softwaredeveloper@abc.com, top_producer@abc.com) – or if your search is not confidential, your name (johnjones@abc.com).

Note: If you decide to get a new e-mail address or screen name, don't forget to check your "in" box regularly!
